Obukucha is an auspicious tea served on formal and festive days such as New Year, Setsubun and weddings, drunk with a wish for happiness and health.

It is based on kuki hojicha from Shizuoka, blended with fukume plum, brown rice and gold leaf. The aroma and sweetness of the hojicha, the tartness of the plum and the toastiness of the brown rice balance into a fresh taste.

In Kyoto and elsewhere in Kansai there is a custom of drinking obukucha at New Year, to clear away the year's misfortune and bless the new year.
Obukucha is said to date back to the Heian period, when an epidemic spread and a monk gave tea to the sick, who then recovered.
Taking this as a good omen, the emperor of the time began to take tea every New Year's Day.
From then on, drinking tea spread as a New Year observance, and the tea the emperor took came to be called ohukucha, written with characters meaning the emperor's tea.
One account holds that at some point the auspicious tea for blessing the new year became known as obukucha, and that it has been handed down to the present day.

Please consider obukucha for your celebrations.
