Gettou Bancha blends shuutou bancha, an autumn-picked green tea from Makinohara, Shizuoka, with the leaves of gettou (shell ginger), a wild plant from Ishigaki Island, Okinawa.
Shuutou bancha is harvested from around September to October. It has little bitterness and a clean taste.
Gettou is a plant of the ginger family that grows wild on Ishigaki Island and the main island of Okinawa. In Okinawa it is a familiar traditional herb, and its rich fragrance has long been used to deodorize and to help preserve food.
Today it is also valued in cosmetics such as essential oils and hand creams.
Gettou leaves also contain a good deal of polyphenols with high antioxidant activity, which makes the plant well suited to people who pay attention to health and beauty.
In the cup it shows a crisp aroma that rises through the nose and a faint sweetness. The rich fragrance particular to gettou is hard to forget once tasted, and it goes very well with the fresh flavor of shuutou bancha.
